MediaPortal turns a computer into a television and media centre controlled from a full-screen interface. It plays local video, music, pictures, optical media, and live television, while TV Server handles tuners, channel data, recording, and the live buffer. This division matters: MediaPortal can play an ordinary video file immediately, but television does not work until the separate broadcast path knows which tuner, channel, guide entry, and storage location to use. It changes how the computer receives and presents media; it does not convert the library files themselves.
Build the TV path
TV Server detects compatible tuner hardware and scans the frequencies available through the selected provider. A successful scan creates channels, but it does not automatically make every channel usable in the front end. Channel mapping assigns services to tuners, and groups determine how they appear in the television menu. Electronic program guide data is another layer, so a channel can play correctly while its schedule remains empty.
MediaPortal can keep TV Server on one computer and run the viewing interface on others. Each front end needs the correct server name and network access. A firewall rule can block the connection even when the server appears normally in Windows. Test live television on the server first, then connect another room; this separates tuner setup faults from network faults.
Size the live buffer
Live television passes through a timeshift buffer before it reaches the screen. That buffer makes pause, rewind, and channel handover possible. MediaPortal writes it to the folder selected in TV Server Configuration and applies file-count and size limits. Several viewers or tuners can create several buffers at once.
The chosen disk therefore affects more than free capacity. A slow drive, a nearly full volume, or aggressive real-time scanning can interrupt playback and recordings. A large buffer keeps more recent television available for rewind but consumes more storage. Moving the timeshift folder changes only future buffering; it does not move completed recordings, which have their own destination.
Match each decoder
MediaPortal uses installed DirectShow decoders for different picture and sound paths. Television, MPEG-2 video, H.264 material, and audio can each point to a different decoder. Selecting one by brand name does not guarantee correct output across every format. A decoder may play recorded television but show a black screen on live content, or hardware decoding may produce artifacts with a particular graphics driver.
Change one decoder assignment at a time and replay the exact failing item. Codec changes affect playback only; they do not rewrite the source. Installing large codec bundles can add competing filters and make the active path harder to identify. The codec page in MediaPortal Configuration is the safer place to choose a known decoder explicitly.
Shape the front end
The home screen can collect television, recordings, videos, music, weather, and compatible plugins. Skins alter navigation and layout, while plugins add sources or controls. A skin may not expose every screen added by an older plugin, and a plugin built for another MediaPortal generation can fail after an update. Keep a working skin available before replacing the main one.
Library views depend on filenames, folders, and metadata. MediaPortal can browse folders directly or build database views, but the database does not become a backup of the media. Renaming or moving files outside the interface can leave stale entries until the library scans again. Recordings also need enough free space beyond the timeshift allocation, especially when several scheduled programmes overlap.
