Overview

Character AI is a conversational service that generates replies in the style of fictional, historical, original, or user-created characters. A character combines a name, greeting, description, example dialogue, and model instructions with the ongoing chat. The reader types or speaks a message, and Character AI predicts a response that fits that setup. It changes the conversation record and the model’s immediate context; it does not contact a real person behind the character or verify each factual claim before displaying it.

Characters can invent

The service states plainly that characters make things up. A confident reply can contain an invented song, event, quotation, or evidence link. Style consistency can make the claim feel more certain without making it more accurate.

Use a search engine, primary document, or qualified professional when the answer affects health, money, safety, or legal decisions. Asking the character to cite a source does not solve the problem because it can generate a source that does not exist. Treat factual chat as a lead to verify, not a verified record.

Definition shapes behavior

A creator writes the character’s identity and sample exchanges. Those details guide tone, vocabulary, relationships, and recurring behavior. The public name alone does not determine how two characters with the same subject will respond.

Edits to a definition affect later generation, while an existing conversation may still carry earlier context. Starting a fresh chat separates the new setup from a long thread that has already established another pattern. Character AI may still drift away from the definition when the conversation grows or contains conflicting instructions.

Memory has boundaries

The current chat supplies recent context, and memory controls can pin selected information for later replies. That does not turn the model into a complete database of every earlier message. Details can be compressed, confused, or dropped as the thread expands.

Repeat a necessary constraint near the task that depends on it. If a name, date, or story rule must remain exact, keep a separate note outside the chat. A character can agree that it remembers something and still contradict it in the next response.

Calls leave text

Character Calls create a two-way spoken exchange. Character AI converts the conversation into a text chat, and the transcript remains available afterward. Ending the audio call therefore does not erase the words from the account’s conversation history.

Speech recognition can mishear names, accents, or background sound. Check the transcript when an exact term matters. A natural pause or emotional voice does not show that the character understands the situation as a person would; the audio layer still drives generated model output.

Voices need consent

A user can record or upload an audio sample to create a character voice. The creator chooses private or public visibility. A private voice remains available to its creator, while a public voice can appear in search and can be used by other people.

Only upload a voice sample that you have the right to use. Public visibility changes who can reuse it, so review that choice before saving. Character AI has a flag control for reporting a public voice, but a later report cannot guarantee that nobody heard or used it first.

Chats create service data

Character AI collects account information and data generated through interactions, along with usage information and IP addresses. Its privacy materials say the service uses information for operation, personalization, security, support, and model improvement. Regional rights can include access, correction, deletion, or processing restrictions.

A chat is therefore not the same as a private document stored only on the phone. Avoid entering passwords, financial credentials, confidential client records, or material that another person did not consent to share. Deleting one visible thread and exercising a formal data right are separate actions.

Public and private differ

Character visibility controls who can discover and start chats with a creation. It does not convert the underlying service into an offline model. Shared characters also expose the creator’s designed persona to other users, while their private conversations remain governed by the service’s account and privacy controls.

Test a new character privately before publishing it. A greeting that looks harmless can steer later replies in an unwanted direction, and public users can approach the character with prompts the creator never tried. Character AI can filter or moderate output, but the creator still needs to review the identity and sample dialogue before sharing.
