DiskRaptor is a disk usage analyzer and storage cleaner for Windows, macOS, and Linux from Hansjoerg Hofer. Its free, open-source core scans drives and folders, displays their contents by size, and provides cleanup tools. An optional paid Pro license adds duplicate finding and scheduled reports.
Scanning a drive or folder
Users choose a directory, drag a folder onto DiskRaptor, or enter several paths with semicolons between them. The program scans multiple paths sequentially. Results show file sizes, folder totals, file counts, and modification dates in an expandable tree. Permission errors can leave folders outside the results.
An idle timeout watches for scans that stop completing work. Users can change or disable it, cancel scanning, or restart the same path with a longer timeout. This retry starts from the beginning. Cancellation can remain pending while an operating system call stalls. Interrupted scans identify their results as partial.
Reading the disk map
DiskRaptor offers pie charts, a treemap, bar charts, and a Galaxy view that represents storage in three dimensions. Clicking a chart item jumps to its entry in the directory tree. Size bars compare each tree entry with its parent, while a separate list ranks large files.
File-type and minimum-size filters narrow the results. Find Files searches existing scan data through filename patterns, extensions, size ranges, and modification age. Selecting a match locates it in the tree. Context menus open files in the system file manager, open a terminal, copy paths, or move items to trash.
Duplicate groups
The Pro duplicate finder first groups files by size, then compares content hashes to confirm matches. It checks complete contents after filtering candidates and excludes files that change during verification. Results group matching copies and estimate reclaimable space. Users review the paths and select copies for removal. The group selection controls retain one copy while marking others for trash.
Targeted cleanup
Separate cleanup tools work from specific sources:
- Downloads Cleanup lists temporary, older, and large files from the Downloads folder. Users select candidates and confirm moving them to trash.
- Empty Folders searches the current scan. An option includes folders containing only empty files, but deletion rechecks contents and skips folders that contain files.
- Browser cleanup lists detected browsers with separate cookie and cache totals. Users choose browsers, profiles, and data categories, then confirm removal. Clearing cookies signs users out of websites.
Folder protection in Settings prevents DiskRaptor from deleting items within the paths that users protect.
Restoring trash
Trash Recovery lists items in the operating system’s trash or Recycle Bin, including their original paths. Users select entries and restore them, or permanently delete individual selections. A separate empty-trash command removes all trash contents after confirmation. Recovery works with trash entries rather than files that permanent deletion has already removed.
App Manager
App Manager inventories installed programs and shows publisher, version, installation size, and date when available. Users filter names, sort columns, select applications, and request updates or uninstallation. Windows updates use winget; Linux uses the application’s package manager. On Mac, update handling follows an application’s App Store or Sparkle channel.
Some updates finish in an external store or installer, and the manager reports them as pending. The Mac App Store build prevents updates and uninstallation of other applications.
S.M.A.R.T. reports
Users select a physical drive and request its health report. DiskRaptor displays identification, temperature, health status, and drive attributes when the hardware and permissions allow access. Text and JSON exports preserve the report. Windows can offer an administrator restart for fuller attributes. The Mac App Store build does not provide S.M.A.R.T. access.
Mac snapshot space
The APFS panel separates volume usage, purgeable space, and snapshots. Users can permanently remove a volume’s local Time Machine snapshots after confirmation. Daily or weekly cleanup settings control when DiskRaptor checks for snapshot cleanup at startup. Snapshot space estimates reflect the blocks that snapshots share with live files.
Process memory
Memory Optimizer ranks processes by RAM use and shows their CPU activity. Users can terminate a process after confirmation, closing that application without saving its work. DiskRaptor protects itself and certain system processes. On Windows, Optimize All trims accessible process working sets and reports the memory change. Other platforms lack that trimming operation.
Exporting scan results
Manual exports produce CSV, JSON, or HTML, with summary and chart options for HTML. Scan history shows size changes since the previous scan of a path. Pro scheduling scans a chosen folder daily or weekly while DiskRaptor runs, then downloads an HTML report.
