Overview

MultitrackStudio is an audio and MIDI recording workstation from Bremmers Audio Design for Windows and Mac, with a separate iPad edition. It records performances, edits tracks, processes instruments and effects, and mixes songs into audio files. Desktop users can choose free Lite or paid Standard and Pro editions; the iPad app has an optional Pro Extension.

Songs reference their recordings

A desktop song stores track names, mixer settings, effects and references to audio and MIDI files. The song file contains no recorded media itself, so playback also needs those source files. Export Song gathers the required files into a ZIP for transfer, including exchanges with the iPad edition.

Recording alongside existing tracks

Add Track creates an audio or MIDI track. For audio, the input selector beside Rec chooses the microphone or line-input channel. Arming Rec and starting the transport captures the performance while existing tracks play. Level meters show the incoming signal.

Loop recording creates successive takes for later selection. Standard and Pro add punch recording, which replaces a selected region while preserving the surrounding performance. Standard and Pro also offer Sound on Sound, which adds new material without erasing the original part.

Turning MIDI into sound

MIDI tracks capture a hardware keyboard or the onscreen keyboard, which also accepts computer-keyboard input. The Instrument Slot chooses how those notes sound. Options include General MIDI instruments, samplers, external synthesizers and instrument plugins.

A software instrument produces audio inside MultitrackStudio. An external instrument sends MIDI to the selected output device. Desktop plugin support includes CLAP and VST, plus Audio Units on Mac.

Waveform edits

Each audio track opens a waveform editor for selecting, copying, deleting or moving a passage. Edit controls change its level, fades or playback direction. Ordinary edits preserve the original recording through separate edit files and references; automatic crossfades join edited boundaries.

Standard and Pro add pitch shifting, time stretching and vocal pitch correction. The correction controls can restrict target notes or follow a MIDI guide track. Speed sets how quickly the correction follows a note.

Notes, patterns and tempo

Pianoroll, Score and Drum tabs provide different views of MIDI notes. Quantize moves selected notes toward a chosen rhythmic grid, with depth controls for the amount of correction. Controller editing adjusts information such as sustain or volume.

Pattern tracks hold repeated instances of a musical phrase. Changing the pattern updates its instances together.

Tempo map

The Tempo Editor requires at least one MIDI track, and users stop the transport before editing tempo. The Tempo Editor changes the pace of selected song sections through typed values, tapping or a draggable line. Its Audio option also stretches audio tracks; desktop audio stretching requires Standard or Pro.

Coordinated track edits

Pro’s Multitrack Editor can show same-color tracks, tracks with open editors or every track. Users stop playback, then apply changes across the displayed tracks together.

Routing the mix

Tracks feed the Master section directly or through Groups, while effect sends route sound to shared Effect Returns. During playback, software instruments follow the audio mixing path; external MIDI hardware bypasses that audio processing.

Effect slots accept processors such as EQ, compression and reverb, or compatible plugins. Users select a processor, adjust its controls and bypass it to compare the untreated signal. Dragging moves effects between slots, and presets recall their settings.

Pro automation

Pro records fader and knob movements during playback or edits parameter curves in an automation editor. Automation recording does not run while the transport cycles. External sidechaining lets another track control a dynamics processor. For example, a kick-drum signal can drive compression on the bass track.

Master Limiter

Standard and Pro supply a Master Limiter for the final Master effect slot. Drive raises amplification, while look-ahead processing lowers peaks before they reach the output.

Mix Down output

Mix Down renders the chosen start-to-end range into one audio file. Users choose its format, quality and destination. Standard and Pro add FLAC, M4A and MP3 export to the basic WAV output. External MIDI instruments need an audio recording before offline mixdown.

Pro can export separate audio stems for tracks or Groups, with an option to include track effects. Export MIDI Tracks instead combines selected MIDI tracks into one MIDI file.

The iPad studio

The standalone iPad app records audio and MIDI, edits notes and waveforms, and mixes through effects and instruments. Touch controls select passages, move notes and resize their durations. AUv3 effects, instruments and MIDI effects integrate compatible apps.

Its base edition supports sixteen tracks; the Pro Extension raises that limit to sixty-four and adds automation, pitch shifting, stretching and Groups. Export Mix writes WAV, FLAC or M4A, while song ZIPs preserve the project for transfer.

Remote recording controls

The separate MultitrackStudio Remote companion controls the desktop transport, mixer, tracks and effects from an iPad. Pairing uses the desktop’s connection code; both devices share the home network, and the iPad uses Wi-Fi.
